Background
VCF® Vaginal Contraceptive Film®
|
For
decades scientists and researchers have tried to develop
the perfect contraceptive for both men and women. Unobtrusiveness,
effectiveness, safety, ease of use, portability and cost
has always been the unattainable combination of criteria
for formulating a new drug in this category. Despite
the array of contraceptive choices, there are over 3,000,000
unwanted pregnancies in the U.S. alone. It is obvious
that millions of Americans use no form of contraception
at all.
Until now, spermicides have been messy, irritating, awkward to administer
and obtrusive to either or both partners.
VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film delivers N-9 in the form of an ultrathin
dissolving piece of transparent material. Unlike all other spermicides,
VCF is undetectable by either partner. The reason is that its unique form
contains far less inactive ingredient that is required in foams, gels,
suppositories and creams to deliver the spermicide itself.
VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film answers the questions by millions of consumers
as to their need for the perfect contraceptive. VCF is the first non-invasive,
non-hormonal contraceptive that neither partner can feel.
Formulation & Pharmacology
VCF
Vaginal Contraceptive Film consists of a water-soluble
square of film, approximately 2 x 2 inches, into which
has been incorporated the potent non-ionic chemical spermicide
nonylphnenoxypolyethoxyethanol (nonoxynol-9). The Federal
Food and Drug AdministrationĂs advisory panel on human
use has reviewed the ingredient nonoxynol-9 and rated it
Category 1, safe and effective for use as OTC vaginal contraceptive
in proper dosage. What sets VCF apart from competition
is that VCF delivers an effective dose of N-9 with a minimum
amount of inactive, messy ingredients and difficult application.
There are no aerosol cans, no plastic applicators or other
obtrusive, time-consuming and uncomfortable application
methods. It is virtually undetectable to either partner.
Vaginal Contraceptive Film has been the subject of numerous safety and efficacy studies conducted worldwide. Over 30 studies in countries ranging from Great Britain to Japan have followed over 1,000 women through 10,000 menstrual cycles. Based on these studies, when used as directed, the product shows a Pearl Index failure rate of 5.9. What sets VCF apart from other products is the factor of compliance, a most important element in determining effectiveness. Once a woman tries VCF, she tends to continue to use the product because of its unobtrusiveness and acceptability to both sexual partners. This is the single most important issue in contraception. |
