DANGERS AT THE DRUGSTORE - WHAT TO LOOK FOR
When used on their own, many over-the-counter products can be helpful. But when they are combined with prescription medications, they can have dangerous, even deadly, side effects.
Consequently, there are a few things a consumer should consider when buying any over-the-counter (OTC) products at the drugstore.
Step One: Read Labels
Even though doctors are usually careful about prescribing multiple medications to the same patient because many chemicals used in prescription drugs do not necessarily mix well with the chemicals found in other medications, there can be problems.
According to a study first published in the 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association, more than 2 million Americans were hospitalized in one year alone for bad reactions to properly prescribed medications. Of those, 100,000 died, making this one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
But what happens if the patient decides to take another medication without telling the doctor? Or what if a user forgets to read warnings printed on labels? This is particularly important to older consumers, those who are most likely to already be taking medication for a health condition.
Did you
know that older Americans comprise 13 percent of the population,
yet purchase almost 30 percent of non-prescription drugs sold in

Many non-prescription, OTC, seemingly innocent, brand-name health products available to anyone in any drugstore, such as decongestants, weight loss pills, cough suppressants and the like, also contain chemicals that can interact badly with other prescribed medications.
The adverse reactions range from a dilution of the effect of the prescription drug, to the patient experiencing a variety of unwanted side effects, including an exacerbation of unwanted symptoms, or even, in the extreme example, death.
Therefore, understanding the ingredients found in a given product is vitally important. Reading the label on the package is critical.
