MILLIONS ARE AT RISK

Biggest OTC Recall In History of PPA Products Still Leaves Tens Of Millions Of People At Risk With The Replacement Pseudoephedrine HCL

NEW YORK -- Nov. 21, 2000 -- Prompted by a scientific link between PPA (phenylpropanolamine) and rare strokes in women, the Food and Drug Administration is calling for the removal of products containing PPA from drug store shelves. These products, including Dimetapp®, Dexatrim®, Acutrim®, Contac®, Comtrex Maximum Strength®, and Alka-Selzer Plus®, constitute one of the largest categories of OTC drugs on the market. Yet, even with their removal, an estimated 90 million Americans will still remain at risk.

For years, all OTC products containing PPA have been required to contain warnings against their use by the millions of people suffering from myriad health problems ranging from high blood pressure to heart disease, diabetes and enlarged prostate. Virtually all of these same warnings are carried on the labeling of OTC drugs containing pseudoephedrine HCI, a likely substitute for PPA. There are great similarities in the way PPA and pseudoephedrine HCI work and in the effect they have on the human body.

However, one company has developed a safe alternative. Apothecus Pharmaceutical Corp. has developed Puralin®, a line of OTC health aides, including Decongestant and Weight Control Tablets, which contain ingredients that are totally safe for these people to take. And Puralin has no interaction with other medications.

According to Daniel Leon, president of Apothecus, "Puralin is directed to the millions who should not be using PPA products except under the advice of a physician. Puralin products have no interaction with other drugs, nor do they have any rebound effect, whereby a condition can actually be exacerbated by the continued use of the product in question. This cannot be said of products containing PPA or pseudoephedrine HCI."

Unlike those products which are allopathic (chemically-stimulated, symptom-suppressants), Puralin utilizes homeopathic ingredients which work in an entirely different way. As opposed to simply dealing with symptoms, Puralin actually uses natural substances which enhance the body's immune system and augment its stress response mechanism.

"Puralin utilizes the European method of Ultra Low Dose Therapy®," explains Mr. Leon. "Puralin stimulates an antibody effect by providing small, mild doses which, in turn, build the body's resistance against a given health problem."
Along with its decongestant and weight loss products, Apothecus is also introducing other Puralin products such as headache pain relievers, arthritis pain relievers, menstrual pain relievers, among others, none of which have any unwanted side effects or interactions with other drugs.

Puralin products are available in Rite-Aid, Eckerds, Meijer and Phar-Mor drug store outlets and are scheduled for immediate shipment into many others.
